Job Description: Director of Finance

Core Responsibilities

As the Director of Finance , the primary responsibilities include:

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Partner with executive leadership on financial strategy, capital allocation, and major business decisions
  • Lead the firm’s financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes
  • Develop financial models to support marketing investments, case acquisition strategies, hiring initiatives, and major business investments
  • Provide executive-level financial reporting and insights to support decision-making
  • Contribute financial analysis and recommendations during quarterly and annual planning initiatives

Finance Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop the Finance Department, including the Finance Operations Manager and AR/AP team members
  • Establish departmental goals, KPIs, and performance expectations
  • Coach, mentor, and develop finance team members while fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
  • Oversee finance department workflows, priorities, and resource allocation

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close

  • Own the month-end close process, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Prepare and deliver accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports
  • Provide executive reporting, financial narratives, and performance analysis
  • Drive continuous improvement in close accuracy, efficiency, and reporting quality

Accounting Operations

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting policies
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including cash management, reconciliations, and intercompany transactions
  • Manage trust accounting and settlement disbursement processes in compliance with applicable regulations and standards
  • Ensure accounting processes support operational scalability and reporting accuracy

Treasury & Cash Management

  • Develop and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts
  • Manage banking relationships and treasury operations
  • Oversee ACH and wire payment controls, approval workflows, and segregation of duties
  • Manage reserve accounts, tax reserves, and cash management activities

Payroll Oversight

  • Oversee payroll administration through ADP
  • Partner with Human Resources regarding new hires, terminations, commissions, bonuses, and benefits reconciliation
  • Maintain payroll procedures and ensure continuity across payroll cycles

Tax Compliance & Audit Management

  • Oversee income tax, sales tax, use tax, and business license compliance
  • Coordinate with external CPAs, tax advisors, and auditors
  • Lead audit preparation and serve as the primary contact for external audit activities
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of all required tax documentation

Internal Controls & Systems

  • Design, implement, and maintain strong financial controls
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for accounting, payroll, treasury, tax, and finance operations
  • Lead finance participation in ERP implementations and financial system enhancements
  • Drive automation and process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce manual effort

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 8–12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including Controller-level or senior finance leadership responsibilities
  • Proven experience leading month-end close and preparing GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Strong experience supervising accounting and finance teams
  • Hands-on experience with trust accounting and settlement disbursement processes
  • Strong understanding of payroll systems, preferably ADP
  • Experience managing treasury operations, banking relationships, and cash flow forecasting
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with executive leadership on strategic financial decisions
  • Strong analytical, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience designing and enforcing internal controls and accounting procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active CPA license preferred
  • MBA or other advanced business credential preferred
  • Experience within a law firm, professional services firm, or multi-entity organization preferred
  • Experience with Sage ERP or other enterprise accounting systems
  • Familiarity with Filevine or similar case management platforms
  • Experience with EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) preferred
  • Settlement disbursement accounting experience preferred
